Nutrition & the Elderly

Nutrition and the Elderly

As our population ages, we should be more aware of their nutritional needs. Study after study has shown, that proper nutrition, and the use of the right type of nutritional supplements can go a long way, in not only increasing ones life, but enhancing the quality of life.

People who exercise regularly, watch what they eat, and supplement daily, will generally live longer and healthier lives. The idea that old people should not exercise, is an idea that needs to be changed. By proper exercise, the elderly will receive the same benefits that their younger counterparts receive, better circulation, improved muscle tone, stronger immune systems, and enhanced metabolism. These will not only improve the physical well-being, but will go a long way in improving their mental outlook as well. Getting older, doesn't mean the end of activity, it only means, restructuring that activity. With your help and expertise, all of your elderly patients should be encouraged to make what ever changes are necessary. That includes, developing exercise programs, along with diet modification, and vitamin supplementation.

Suggesting the proper diet, needs to take into account, your patients present condition, and what if any bad eating habits they have. Remember, these people have been around a while, and if they only indulge in sweets or highly processed foods occasionally, don't make an issue out of it. If their state of health is good, (meaning that they are not taking lots of medications), your job will be a lot easier. Making sure that they take at least a multiple vitamin is important. Women should be taking MCHC and or Femmorone. Men may need extra vitamin E. Always be careful with vitamin E if your patients are already taking a blood thinner. If they are only taking aspirin, you can replace it with the extra vitamin E. All of your Senior Citizens should be taking extra anti-oxidants, like OXY-PRO. Pro-Anthro Forte would be a good idea too.

All of these changes will lead to improved well-being, as long as your patients digestion is working properly. Most of your Seniors will need some digestive assistance. Digestin may be the best choice, since it supports all phases of digestion. By properly supporting digestion, your patients will receive the maximum benefits of not only their food, but also their supplements. Remember, if people cannot digest their food properly, they cannot absorb their supplements properly.
