Definition:
Periodontal disease is the second most occurring infectious disease next to
the common cold in the United States. Periodontal disease is caused
by plaque found at the gum line of your teeth. Bacteria feed off
of this plaque and cause inflammation of the gum tissue. As the
gums swell pockets form between the gums and the teeth. These pockets
become a trap for more food leading to more plague formation, which
in turn leads to more bacteria build-up, and more inflammation and
the cycle continues until the gum is so worn down that it is unable
to hold teeth in place. Periodontal disease is the biggest cause
of tooth loss.
Symptoms:
As the gums become inflamed they tend to bleed easily. As the condition progress
bad breath is more noticeable.
Holistic Treatment Plan:
The best way to treat this condition is to reduce the amount of
bacteria that are present in the oral cavity. The use of an herbal
mouth rinse is most effective at eliminating bacteria present in
the gum. This will in turn eliminate or greatly reduce bleeding,
allow for healthier gums, and reduce the pockets produced by the
bacteria that was present due to the plaque build-up. Frequent scaling
of teeth is also strongly recommended.
