Definition:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive degeneration of the central
nervous system. The disease causes destruction of the myelin sheaths
that cover the nervous system. This destruction results in scarring,
with accompanying dysfunction of the nerves involved.
Symptoms:
In the early stages a person may experience dizziness, mood swings,
vision problems, tingling or numbness, especially in the hands or
feet, balance problems, muscular stiffness, slurred speech, tremors,
feeling of weakness, and for men, impotence. As the disease progresses,
difficulty walking with a stiff gait noticeable. In the advanced
stage movements become more spastic and breathing difficulties will
develop. The disease follows a pattern of flare-ups, followed by
periods in which symptoms diminish or even disappear.
Holistic Treatment Plan:
While the cause of MS is not known, many experts believe that toxins
affecting the nervous system are the culprits. Chemical poisoning
by pesticides, industrial chemicals, and heavy metals especially
mercury is believed to be the problem. Treatment to improve the
quality of life for MS patients consists of both supplements and
dietary changes. A diet high in raw foods as been found to be very
helpful.
