Definition:
Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid, causing an underproduction of thyroid
hormone.
Symptoms:
Fatigue, loss of appetite, sensitivity to cold temperatures, slow heart rate,
weight gain (but not always), painful premenstrual periods, fertility
problems, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, hair loss, recurrent infections,
constipation, depression, ridged nails, and discoloration of palms
are most of the symptoms caused by hypothyroidism. The two most
common symptoms are fatigue and sensitivity to the cold.
Holistic Treatment Plan:
Many times this condition is misdiagnosed. Blood tests that appear
normal, are usually low normals. At these low levels there isn=t
enough thyroid hormone to do the job. People will still have symptoms
of hypothyroidism and they need to address the condition. A condition
called Hashimoto=s disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism.
This is a condition where the body becomes allergic to thyroid hormone.
Treating this disease is slightly different then if the thyroid
is just underactive. Because of its role in thyroid function the
pituitary gland is usually involved in this condition as well. There
certain foods that should be consumed in limited amounts, since
they contain compounds that suppress thyroid function. They include
Brussels sprouts, peaches, pears, spinach, turnips, cabbage, broccoli,
kale, and mustard greens. In severe conditions these foods must
be eliminated completely, in other cases they should only be eaten
once weekly.
