Definition:
Fibrocystic breast disease (FBD), is also known as cystic mastitis. It is a
mildly uncomfortable to severely painful benign cystic swelling
and tenderness of the breast. It is generally cyclic, usually appearing
prior to the beginning of menses each month. FBD is very common
affecting upwards of 40% of menstruating women. FBD is one symptom
of what is known as PMS. It is usually accompanied by other symptoms,
which are listed under PMS. Left untreated, FBD can lead to breast
cancer, however it is not as significant a factor as the classical
breast cancer risk factors, i.e., family history, menses beginning
at an early age, and late or no pregnancy. This disease is apparently
due to imbalances in the female hormonal system. These cysts are
usually due to elevated levels of estrogen. As hormone levels rise
prior to menses symptoms begin, and as the hormone levels drop after
a few days into menses the symptoms disappear.
Symptoms:
Symptoms are sensitive or painful breasts, with some swelling. Both breasts
are usually affected, but not necessarily with the same amount of
tenderness in each breast.
Holistic Treatment Plan:
Treatment for this condition is to balance the female endocrine
system with herbs and vitamins. As well as to avoid the use of caffeine.
Caffeine appears to make this condition worse, its avoidance helps
to improve the symptoms. In some women the avoidance of caffeine
alone can bring relief.
